EVEREST BASE CAMP - ISLAND PEAK (21 DAYS)

Trekking itinerary: Kathmandu – Namche- Thyangboche - Everest Base camp – Kalapattar - Island Peak.

Departures: March/ April/ May/ Sept/ Oct/ Nov 2008

Climbing Grade: Advanced beginner


Itinerary:      

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel

Day 02: City tour.

Day 03: Kathmandu - Lukla - Phakding
This is an hour flight from Kathmandu to Lukla Airport (2,800m). The trail from Lukla, leads north from the airstrip and drops steeply for a bit, then descends gently to Phakding (2,700m), your first overnight here. This is a two hour trek.
 
Day 04: Phakding - Namche
From Phading the trail continues north up the Dudh Koshi Valley. (Koshi which means river in Nepali and it comes down from the Everest glacier). All along this part of the trail, there is a magnificent forest of Magnolia, rhododendron and giant firs. On the cliffs above the river it is possible to see musk deer and Himalayan tahr. At Monjo the trek enters the Sagarmatha National Park. The trail follows the river and crosses Dudh Koshi and makes a steep climb to Namche (3,440m). Namche is a very colorful Sherpa village where you will see vendors selling antiques and each Saturday there is an important weekly haat or market.

Day 05: Namche
We will have a rest and acclimatization day in Namche.

Day 06: Namche - Khumjung
From Namche we come to Khumjung which is 3 hr walk. We stop at Khumjung where there is a school built by Hillary trust. The views of Amadablam, Thamserku and Tawache are really breathtaking... Khumjung’s elevation is 3,790m.

Day 07: Khumjung – Phortse
From Khumjung, the route descends to the west of the village down the broad valley leading to the Dudh Kosi and to Phortse at 3,500m, an isolated Sherpa village of about 60 houses. This is four hrs walk to Phortse.

Day 08: Phortse – Dingboche
It is five hrs walk to Dingboche.
The trail follows the Imja Khola and gradually ascends to Dingboche (4,410m). From here the views are great and the mountain views are outstanding. This is four hrs walk.
 
Day 09: Dingboche
We have a rest and acclimatization day in Dingboche. We will day hike to the Chukkung valley and climb Chukkung Ri. Return to Dingboche.
 
Day 10: Dingboche - Lobuche
The trail ascends the broad, gently sloping valley to Phalang Karpo at 4,340m. The trail crosses small streams on boulders. The views of Tawachee and Cholatse (6,440m) are outstanding from along the trail. From Dugla (4,620m) the trail climbs higher on the moraine to a row of stone monuments built in the memory of those who have died in Everest. The trail then drops a bit and follows the western side of the valley to Lobuche (4,930m). This is a four/five hrs trek. We will camp here to avoid the crowded tea houses. We will have our own kitchen crew and Sherpa for organizing the camp.
 
Day 11: Lobuche - Gorakshep (Everest Base Camp)
The ascent becomes steeper and rougher as it crosses several side moraines. The peak of Pumori (7,145m) comes into view. On this lower slope of this mountain a ridge extending to the south terminates in a small peak. This peak, Kalapattar, is 5545m and it provides the best vantage point for viewing Mt Everest. The trail makes a short descend to Gorakshep (5,160m). You will reach Gorakshep by lunchtime and trek to Everest Base Camp in the afternoon and return to Gorakshep for the night. This is a six/seven hrs trek. We will camp here.
 
Day 12: Gorakshep - Kalapattar – Dingboche (4,410m)
 On this lower slope of this Mt Pumori a ridge extending to the south terminates in a small peak. This peak, Kalapattar, is 5545m and it provides the best vantage point for viewing Mt Everest. We will climb Kalapattar in the morning and spend some time on the top. Return to Goraksheep for breakfast and trek downwards to Dingboche. We will camp here.

Day 13: Dingboche – Island peak base camp
Chukkung is three hrs walk from Dingboche. Hike up the Imja Khola valley to Chukkung, a small summer settlement at 4,730m. The views from Chukkung and further up the valley on the moraines towards Island peak (6,189m) is tremendous. The great southern face of Lhotse towers above to the north. From Chukkung, we keep heading up the Imja Khola valley and camp at base camp 5200m.

Day 14: Island peak base camp - High Camp (5,700m)
We climb up to high camp. This is total 2 hrs climb.

Day 15: Summit day! Island peak (6,189m)
We leave early today for the summit. Return to high camp and we will come down further 300 m and camp at the base camp.

Day 16: Island Peak base camp – Pangboche
We start heading down to Pangboche. This is 5 hrs walk.

Day 17: Pangboche- Namche
We pass the Deboche nunnery and the famous Thyangboche monastery. We will stop here for at least an hr and will tour the nunnery and the monastery. There are about 30 Buddhist nuns living here. Climb High has done a restoration project here.

Day 18: Namche – Lukla

Day 19: Lukla – Kathmandu

Day 20: Rest day in Kathmandu

Day 21: Departure.
