Kanchenjunga Trek
Duration: 28 days
Region: Kanchenjunga Region
Dates: March / April / May / October / November
Kanchenjunga area was opened recently in 1988 to trekkers. The immigration office will issue trekking permits for the Kanchenjunga region only to groups and not to individual trekkers. Kanchenjunga, at 8,586m, is the third highest mountain and has several distinct summits. A British team led by Charles Evans made the first ascent of Kanchenjunga in 1953. They climbed from the south of Nepal and climbed the south face of the peak. It is on the border of Nepal and the Indian state of Sikkim. You can trek either to the north or south Kanchenjunga base camp but you need lot of determination, luck and lot of time to visit both sides of the peak. You can fly to Taplejung or Tumlingtar from Kathmandu where there are STOL airstrips. There is no inhabitant in the upper part of the mountains and trekkers need to be self sufficient.
